Welcome to SolSpace

Welcome to SolSpace, which covers a region of space some 500 parsecs across, centered on our own system, Sol, and based on real astronomical maps. The year is 2296.

SolSpace is set in an age of galactic exploration as the Allied Union of Worlds uncovers new worlds and new alien cultures, fielding mighty exploration vessels such as the USF Copernicus. Encounter alien life and exotic worlds both friendly and hostile; serve aboard a starship as it explores beyond the boundaries of known space; or make a living as a trader or smuggler on the frontiers.

The Union

Formed in 2245, the Allied Union of Worlds is a body akin to the United Nations. It is not a governing body or a federation, and members of the Union maintain their own sovereignty. The Union has no jurisdiction over individual worlds, except where they conflict with interstellar law. All members of the Union agree via treaty to the provisions of interstellar law.

The Union is funded by its constituent members, and maintains its own navy, The Union Space Force. The USF provides protection to Union members, maintains the freedom of interstellar space, enforces interstellar law, and explores and colonizes the frontiers of known space. It is a far more effective force than any single world could create.

The USF is divided into the Union Space Force Academy (USFA), Colonial Operations (USFCO), Naval Operations (USFN), Marine Corps (USFMC), Frontier Operations (UFO), Intelligence Operations (USFIO), and the Psi-Corps.

Worlds

These are just some of the many alien civilizations within the SolSpace setting. The Galactic Sentience Catalog contains details of many more alien species. Sectors form an irregular patchwork of regions. SolSpace is the core sector, and includes the region which was referred to as the Outer Rim in the 22nd Century. Other sectors include the Nereid Sector, and the Galileo Sector, comprising currently unaligned and mainly corporate owned worlds.

  • Azatbar. The Spartans—their homeworld may be colloquially called Sparta by earthlings, but its name is actually Azatbar—has a small empire of a handful of colonized and conquered planets. Spartan space is located within the non-contiguous area which contains the various Union worlds. The situation between the Spartans and the Union is best compared to a cold war.

  • Boria. Borians hail from the 47 moons of Boria, which all orbit an enormous gas giant in the Hyacinth Nebula.

  • Felax. The Felan homeworld is in the Fomalhaut system about 8 parsecs from Sol. The systems notable for the gas giant Dagon, the first extrasolar planet ever discovered by Human telescopes, way back in 2008.

  • Ogron IV & V. The Ogron Twins, the two homeworlds of the Ogron race, are a permanent thorn in the side of the Union Worlds. Ogrons ignore the Union, doing exactly as they wish—plundering, slaving, and worse.

  • Vendalyr. The Venetians are the most technologically advanced of the races in SolSpace. They colonized Vendalyr, in the Beehive Cluster, a few hundred years ago after a mass migration from their own dying world.

Other civilizations, both friendly and adversarial, can be found in the Galactic Sentience Catalog. These include the winged Acorax from Izar, the aquatic Bragi from Sulafat up near the Great Rift, the fungoid Fornians from the red giant Mira system, the psionic Greys which hail from Adhafera, the devil-looking Hellions from a heavily industrialized moon orbiting the red star Tejat, the insectoid Pajak from Kraz, the snake-like Vouki of Abliero out by the Helix Nebula, the horrifying spider-esque Chorax from the dark world of Mirach, and many, many more.

USF Copernicus

While the Starship Recognition Manual contains dozens of starships, from mighty exploration cruisers and battleships to small scouts, none are as iconic as the Endeavour Class XI Cruiser. The USF Copernicus is assigned to the United Space Force Frontier Operations Command. Endeavour-class cruisers are highly prestigious vessels, and the Copernicus is no exception.

Endeavours are designed for long-range deep space exploration, and are capable of multi-year missions. With 17 decks, these vessels are nearly a third of a kilometer in length, and boast extensive research and exploration capability, as well as defensive power. When an Endeavour-class ship moves into a star system, the balance of power shifts. The Spartan Navy views these vessels as powerful battlecruisers, although in reality their function is usually far more peaceful.
